Role Description:

To support our continuing growth, we are seeking a motivated hydrologist with 1-3 years of UK industry experience to join our Water and Engineering Team, to support in the delivery of a variety of environmental and nature-based engineering projects.

This post is an excellent opportunity for an individual in their early career to develop their core skills as part of a diverse team of water specialists and engineers.  Working in an established multi-disciplinary consultancy, the successful candidate would also broaden their skills through involvement in cross-team projects, project management and business processes.

Continuing professional development will be fully supported through a combination of project-based guidance, specific training and mentoring, including support on the route to chartership.

The role may include, but not be limited to, the following elements:

  • Compilation and analysis of spatial and environmental monitoring data;
  • Field surveys and monitoring, including: peat depth surveys, water quality sampling, construction site visits, river and land surveys (e.g., GNSS-based spatial surveys, UAV);
  • Preparation of maps and drawings using GIS; 
  • Provision of hydrology and modelling support within a large team of hydrologists and engineers for a range of studies (e.g. catchment characterisation, hydrological analysis, flood risk assessment, surface water management);
  • Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA);
  • Technical support to river, peatland and coastal restoration projects; and
  • Project management support.

Your Qualifications & Experience:

  • Honours or Masters in a hydrology-related environmental discipline (e.g. catchment management, hydrogeology, earth sciences, environmental management) or environmental engineering; and
  • Ideally 1 to 3 years consultancy experience.

Your attributes and skills:  

  • A strong ambition and work ethic, with a proactive attitude towards developing into this role;
  • Flexible attitude to hybrid working and site work (on occasion this will involve working away from home for one night or more);
  • Practical onsite abilities and an interest in undertaking site visits and environmental monitoring in a range of environments (e.g. rivers, uplands, construction sites, windfarm developments, quarries);
  • General understanding of relevant technical aspects (e.g. hydrology and modelling of water environments, environmental data analysis and modelling, environmental impact assessment and mitigation, environmental restoration, sustainable drainage and flood management);
  • Sound awareness of Scottish environmental conditions and regulatory systems, such as Environmental Impact Assessment and Controlled Activities Regulations;
  • Industry experience in two or more of the following core areas:  water monitoring; hydrology; hydrogeology; modelling; geomorphology; river restoration; wetland / peatland management; environmental engineering; drainage; flood risk management; water environment support to EIA; 
  • Basic experience in the following would be advantageous but is not essential:
  • GIS / CAD;
  • Hydrological analysis packages e.g. ReFH, LowFlows;
  • Hydraulic modelling packages e.g. Flood Modeller or HEC-RAS.
  • Experience contributing to project management and delivery;
  • Excellent report writing and communication skills;
  • Good organisational skills; 
  • Problem solving skills and attention to detail;
  • Competent with Microsoft Office; and
  • Full UK Driving Licence.
