EnviroCentre Limited have multiple opportunities for motivated and observant individuals to join our Environmental Clerk of Work team to assist in the provision of on-site environmental advice, auditing and monitoring of compliance, and delivery of licensing support and reporting, mainly on housing development, renewable energy and road infrastructure projects across Scotland.

We are seeking staff with varying previous site experience, offering mentoring and training to individuals embarking on their environmental consultancy careers, and excellent opportunities for experience and career advancement for more experienced individuals.

The successful candidate will work closely with colleagues, and industry partners in other technical disciplines, to assist in the delivery of our project work. Additionally, there will be opportunities to work independently on certain tasks and technical aspects, as well as develop professional and specialist skills supported by EnviroCentre’s mentoring system.  

The role may include, but not be limited to, the following elements:

  • Delivery of onsite environmental compliance auditing and provision of an advisory role on a diverse range of construction projects including housing developments, renewable energy and road infrastructure projects;
  • Monitoring of construction sites’ compliance with planning conditions and regulatory requirements;
  • Delivery of construction site environmental regulations compliance reports as well as the creation of site -specific Surface Water Management Plans (SWMP) and Pollution Prevention Plans (PPP);
  • Identification of environmental issues and provision of advice regarding mitigation measures to alleviate such issues;
  • Provision of project management and project delivery support to a strong team delivering EnvCoW services across the country;
  • Management and delivery of projects within budget and programme;
  • Liaison with clients, partner organisations, sub-consultants and statutory authorities/regulators;
  • Direct communication and working relationship with client and contractors on site in support of environmental goals, management and ultimately compliance;  
  • Writing and reviewing of technical reports;
  • Potentially having to work away from home and outside office hours as required; and
  • Mentoring and growing of the team through knowledge transfer and development of existing skills and expertise.

Required qualifications, experience and skills:

  • A relevant degree in Environmental Management or a related discipline, ideally with a further education qualification (MSc in a relevant environmental discipline is desirable but not essential).
  • A full UK driver’s licence;
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills;
  • The ability to work well under pressure and undertake several tasks simultaneously;
  • Confident and comfortable working as part of a team or on your own in the outdoor environment and on construction sites; and
  • Good time management and record keeping.

Desirable experience and skills, especially for senior roles:

  • Experience working with contractors to deliver advice and mitigation on site to ensure client commitments are met, ideally within the role of Environmental Clerk of Works;
  • Ability to build effective relationships with clients, contractors and regulators;
  • Working knowledge of environmental and ecological constraints during construction, along with appropriate mitigation measures;
  • An understanding of current environmental legislation, policy trends and guidance;
  • A competent understanding of relevant regulatory framework e.g. CAR, SuDS, EIA, flood risk;
  • A good understanding of standard guidance for pollution prevention;
  • Demonstrable problem solving/contingency planning skills with ability to find quick, innovative and practical solutions;
  • A current CSCS card (EnviroCentre will support application for new applicants);
  • The ability to operate a 4x4 vehicle safely; and
  • Membership of the Association of Environmental Clerks of Works (AECoW).
